Larry Cherubino, a first-generation Australian with strong Italian heritage, developed an early passion for wine through his family’s involvement in grape pressing. His parents even had a small vineyard. In contrast, his wife Edwina’s ancestors planted the first vines along the Frankland River in Western Australia in 1875.
Larry started his career as a horticulturist, meeting Edwina in 1994 after graduating. However, he soon transitioned into winemaking, making a name for himself at Tintara and later at the historic Houghton winery. His skills quickly gained recognition, leading to consultancy work not only in Australia but across New Zealand, the US, South Africa, France, and Italy. In 2004, Larry and Edwina purchased their first piece of land in Frankland River, originally part of a historic estate called Riversdale, and made their first wine under the Cherubino label in 2005. A few years later, they acquired a neighboring vineyard, knowing it had immense potential.
Today, the Cherubinos manage over 120 hectares of vineyards across six sites, all farmed with sustainable, organic practices. These include the Riversdale North and Riversdale South Vineyards in Frankland River, the Justin Vineyard in Frankland, Chanyybearup in Pemberton, Pedestal in Margaret River, and Pannoo in Porongurup. The variety of red and white grape varieties grown across these vineyards includes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, and many more, contributing to an impressive portfolio of over 70 wines across 9 ranges, all featuring distinctive labels that tell the story of their award-winning wines.
Larry adopts a minimal intervention approach in the cellar, believing that the key to great wine lies in the vineyard. His horticultural background has taught him that quality produce leads to exceptional wine. His philosophy is simple: “Growing Grapes, Making Wine.” His talent has earned him recognition, with his winery being named “Winery of the Year” by James Halliday and Matt Skinner.
