Eben Sadie embarked on his winemaking journey at Spice Route, under the label of Charles Back, before venturing out on his own in 1999. His reputation as South Africa’s most innovative and inspired winemaker took flight with the inaugural release of Columella in the 2000 vintage.
Driven by a passion to showcase the essence of a region or specific vineyard site, Eben crafts his acclaimed Signature Series wines, Columella and Palladius. Columella, a blend primarily featuring Syrah complemented by Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, and Cinsault, stands as one of South Africa’s finest wines, paying homage to an early wine industry scribe.
The esteemed Signature Series welcomed the Old Vine Series (Die Ouwingerdreeks) in 2010, a project close to Eben’s heart. Collaborating with renowned viticulturist Rosa Kruger, Eben sought out, revived, and preserved old vineyards across the Cape, resulting in limited-production wines that offer a captivating glimpse into South Africa’s winemaking heritage. These exceptional wines, alongside the Signature Series, underscore Eben’s mastery in winemaking.
The accolade of Platter Guide’s Winery of the Year, bestowed upon Sadie Family Wines in 2010 and 2015, further solidifies Eben Sadie’s position as a leading figure in the world of wine.
