The history of Schloss Gobelsburg dates back to 1171 when the Cistercian monks of the Zwettl monastery acquired their first two vineyards, which still produce wine today. In the eighteenth century, the castle and its vineyards were expanded, with the main building undergoing a Baroque transformation under the direction of one of its notable owners.
In addition to being home to Austria’s earliest recorded vines, Schloss Gobelsburg is committed to organic farming practices that predate modern trends, minimizing the use of chemicals and allowing the land to express its true character. Today, its agricultural practices are certified as sustainable, emphasizing minimal reliance on machinery in the winemaking process.
